In the early 1500s, Mary appeared to a Mexican peasant named Juan Diego four separate times. Mary asked Juan Diego to build a church where she appeared to him, but no one would believe him—at first. When the archbishop demanded proof of Juan’s visions, Mary filled Juan Diego’s tilma (cloak) with roses. Later when he opened his tilma, the roses fell to the floor revealing underneath the heavenly image of Our Blessed Mother.
