              THE DESIGN
Using watercolour to depict the Immaculate Heart of Mary, where St. Luke writes she "kept all these things" (Luke 2:51) that she learnt as a mother of Jesus. It represents her love for Christ ad the World, even as it is pierced with a sword (from the prophecy of Simeone in Luke 2:35). The image of burning with love, surrounded by roses, is similar to the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. These two images are very often seen together, especially due to their inclusion on the back of the Miraculous Medal, give to St. Catherine Laboure in the mid-19th century.
