Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to St. Juan Diego in 1531 and asked him to tell the bishop to build a church. He followed her direction and went to the bishop, who asked for proof. She appeared to him again and told him to to go to the top of hill where they first met, where he unexpectedly found roses. He gathered them in his tilma (cloak) and took them to the bishop. Both were amazed to see that the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe was on his tilma when he opened it to show the roses!
