THE DESIGN 

The parents of our Blessed Mother are first mentioned in the Protoevangelium of St. James. Struggling with their inability to conceive, St. Joachim went into the wilderness to pray for 40 days. St. Anne, lamenting their situation after seeing a nest of birds, was visited by an angel who said she would have a child. She was then reunited with St. Joachim, who had also been told the same by an angel. Their daughter, Mary was born 9 months later.
